You have been recently hired as a computer technician at a local computer sales and repair shop. The shop offers a variety of services that range from installing new applications and fixing computers to recovering lost or deleted data. One service provided by this company is the opportunity for customers to have a computer built to their personal specifications. As a technician, it is your responsibility to capture the customer’s unique requests.

As part of the training process, your manager would like to evaluate how effective you are at this task, so he asked that you complete a two-part project:

Build a computer using a list of unique specifications and troubleshoot any problems that may come up during the building process.

Create a user manual that documents how to build the computer.

When you are finished, you will submit the user manual to your manager for review. It will ultimately be used to train new computer technicians at the shop.

After speaking with your manager about the project, you realize that you will be very busy over the next few weeks. In addition to working on the project, you will also be in the process of preparing for the CompTIA A+ certification. One of the conditions of your employment at this company is that you obtain this certification within 60 days of being hired. You will have to manage your time wisely, because you will have to take a practice certification test just as you are completing the final stages of this project.

In this learning demonstration, you will use the TestOut PC Pro (LabSim) to help you understand the steps needed to build and troubleshoot a computer and pass the CompTIA A+ certification exams. In order to identify your strengths and weaknesses, you will first complete the practice exams that will prepare you for the certification. The practice exams are designed to assess your preparedness for the CompTIA A+ certification exams.

The learning materials within LabSim will help you understand the process of installing, configuring, and troubleshooting a computer system. As you step through each set of activities, you will also be drafting sections of the user manual. Use the results of the certification practice exam you took at the beginning of the class to help guide you on which areas within LabSim you should pay closer attention to. You must complete all online labs in LabSim; these are the activities with the computer mouse icon. Some of the other areas in LabSim are optional. You can complete any or all of those if you feel you need to learn more about the topics at hand. For example, if you feel comfortable with your understanding of computer RAM, you don’t have to watch the video lecture about computer memory or watch the demonstration video on how to install computer memory, but you will have to complete the online labs in that section.

Once you have completed all of the online labs in LabSim, retake the practice exams. Finally, you will submit the final version of your computer build manual.

Completion of this project will demonstrate your ability to master a number of competencies articulated in the Computer Networks and Cybersecurity program. O&M Manuals provide procedures to operate and maintain a facility's various systems and equipment. It is important to analyze and evaluate a facility from the system level, then develop procedures to attain the most efficient systems integration, based on as-built information and the Maintenance Program philosophy. The following paragraphs provide an example of system-level O&M Manual layout and technical content/description that can be successfully applied to many facility types.

System-Level O&M Manual Layout

Introduction: Introduces the reader to the facility. Outlines the structure, content, how to use the manual, and includes a brief outline of the various systems covered. Safety Data: Safety hazards commonly associated with the operation of system/equipment applicable to the facility are identified and their prevention is discussed.

Building Interior & Exterior: Includes housekeeping and general maintenance of the facility. The importance of conducting an annual inspection is discussed together with record keeping forms for conducting the inspections.

Maintenance Charts: Maintenance charts include maintenance frequency checklists, maintenance summary, lamp replacement data sheet, equipment data sheets, recommended maintenance and service contacts, and a recommended work order form.

Manufacturers' Literature: Identifies manuals, cut sheets, etc., from equipment manufacturers that amplify information provided within the system-level O&M manual. Manufacturers' literature generally provides procedures to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair specific items at the equipment level. This information is contained in a separate volume of binders, identified by facility/system, for easy reference. Specific material or complete documents can also be electronically scanned for its 'on-line' use, such as linking from the system-level manual.
