Question

Explain each type of obstetrical-related mortality rates. Also calculate the following: a. If the yearly deaths due to puerperal causes was 200, and the total number of live births recorded was 3,400,000 in that same year, what would be the maternal mortality rate? b. If 30,000 live births were reported in a city, along with 215 infant deaths, what would be the infant mortality rate for that state? c. If neonatal deaths were 2,846, and live births were 357,463 for the same given time period, what would be the neonatal mortality rate of that state? d. If the number of fetal deaths were 2,467, neonatal deaths were 2,591, infant deaths were 4,219, and live births were 365,000 during the same period, what would be the perinatal mortality rate for that state? e. If the fetal deaths were 2,943, neonatal deaths were 2,076, postneonatal deaths were 2,614, infant deaths were 4,720, and live births were 347,000 for the same period, what would be the postneonatal mortality rate for that state? f. If induced pregnancy terminations were 2,694, fetal deaths were 2,700, and live births were 300,000 in the same time period, what would be the induced termination of pregnancy rate of that state?

Explanation / Answer

a. If the yearly deaths due to puerperal causes was 200, and the total number of live births recorded was 3,400,000 in that same year, what would be the maternal mortality rate?

maternal mortality rate = The number of live deaths per 100,000 live births

Yearly deaths = 200

live births = 3,400,000

maternal mortality rate = all maternal deaths in a year / total number of live births in that year x 100,000

maternal mortality rate = 5.88 %

b. If 30,000 live births were reported in a city, along with 215 infant deaths, what would be the infant mortality rate for that state?

infant mortality rate: Number of deaths of infants under one year old per 1,000 live births.

215/30,000 x 1,000 = 7.16%

c. If neonatal deaths were 2,846, and live births were 357,463 for the same given time period, what would be the neonatal mortality rate of that state?

neonatal mortality rate = number of neonates dying before reaching 28 days of age, per 1,000 live births

2,846 / 357,463 x 1000 = 7.96

d. If the number of fetal deaths were 2,467, neonatal deaths were 2,591, infant deaths were 4,219, and live births were 365,000 during the same period, what would be the perinatal mortality rate for that state?

perinatal mortality rate = is the number of still births and deaths in first week of life per 1,000 live births.

The perinatal period commences at 22 weeks of gestation and ends after seven completed days of birth. It includes early fetal and late neonatal death.

2,467 + 2,591 / 365,000 x 1000 = 13.85%

e. If the fetal deaths were 2,943, neonatal deaths were 2,076, postneonatal deaths were 2,614, infant deaths were 4,720, and live births were 347,000 for the same period, what would be the postneonatal mortality rate for that state?

Postneonatal mortality rate : is the number of resident newborns dying between 28 and 364 days of age in a specified geographical area divided by number of resident live births per 1,000 live births.

2,614+ 4,720/ 347,000 x 1000 = 21.13%

f. If induced pregnancy terminations were 2,694, fetal deaths were 2,700, and live births were 300,000 in the same time period, what would be the induced termination of pregnancy rate of that state?

Induced termination of pregnancy rate = are done in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy per 1000 live births.

2,694 + 2,700/ 300,000 x 1,000 = 17.98%
