Question
Scenario 2: Curiosity may have gotten the better of you but the alien secretes a sweet smelling intoxicating liquid and you just had to ingest it; didn’t you? Doctors are frantic and hope the alien substance will be filtered and eliminated by your kidney. The doctor asks you to give a urine sample so that it can be tested for the presence of the alien substance.
I. Trace the pathway of the alien substance and all the structures it passes through from the moment it enters the glomerulus to the moment it ends up in your specimen cup.
II. Assuming that the alien substance is not reabsorbed or secreted what should be the glomerular filtration rate of the alien substance be? Be sure to explain what glomerular filtration rate means.
Explanation / Answer
I. The increased blood pressure inside the glomerulus capillaries force to remove water, glucose, urea and all salts. Molecular mass less than 68000 are form the filtrate. Blood cells and plasma proteins are not filtered through glomerular filtrate because of larger size. The filtrate contains water and salts passes to the bowman's capsule called glomerular filtrate. While it passes to the renal tubule and ducts, 99% of the content reabsorbed and only 1% of it leaves the blood from the body called tubular reabsorption. The proximal convoluted tubule and distal convoluted tubule involved in absorption of water and salts. The substances like potassium ions, hydrogen ions, ammonium ions, creatinine, urea, some hormones and drugs and secreted from the blood into the tubular fluid called urine excreted via ureter, bladder and urethra.
II. Since the reabsorbtion and secretions occurs in the renal tubules with the glomerular filtrate. The measure of glomerular filtration rate should be normal. The GFR test measures how well your kidneys are filtering the blood. GFR = volume in ml/min/1.73m2
