Exam 2: Take-home question As we discussed in class scientists use graphs b WI a story I want you to use your graphing skills to tell a story Your task is to present a hypothesis for how leaf water potential and stomata! conductance change over the course of a day for two different plant species. Plant species 1 possesses leaves with relatively high leaf hydraulic conductance whereas plant species 2 possesses leaves with relatively low leaf hydraulic conductance Present your hypothesis as a graph4s) In addition to the graph(s), provide a written explanation for your hypothesis The environmental conditions plant species 1 and 2 experienced over the course of the day are shown in the figure below. Do not hesitate to email me d you have any questions about what I am asking you to doExplanation / Answer
1) Hypothesis: The leaf stomatal conductance and leaf water potential is depends on the hydraulic conductance of the leaf. It is a chief property of vascular plants, which is denoted by using K. The hydraulic conductance is depends on the viscosity, density and degree of saturation and intrinsic permeability of water. The leaf with more hydraulic conductance has more water stomatal conductance and more leaf water potential. The leaf with less hydraulic conductance has less water stomatal conductance and less leaf water potential. This is because the leaf water potential controls the stomatal Conductance.
2) Explanation: Based on the given graph, as the light increases, the vapor pressure also increases, so the stromal conductance decreases. Therefore, at noon time the leaf have low water potential and stomatal conductance, and at 6 am and 8 pm the vapor pressure decreases, water potential and stomatal conductance increases.
