Explanation / Answer

Proteus vulgaris is a gram negative facultative anaerobe, it gives positive result for urease test. P. vulgaris can degrade urea to ammonia by the production if urease, it can be distinguished from other enteric bacteria based on this test. Inoculate the test sample onto nutrient agar media (must contain urea) and add the phenol red indicator. The pH rises by overnight due to the production of ammonia, which is indicated by color change from yellow to red.
