Question
1. Researchers want to estimate the sizes of two populations of Anolis lizards on two different islands. They make two trips to each island. a. On the first trip to Island A, 19 lizards are captured and marked, and on the second trip 23 lizards are captured, of which 3 are marked. Estimate the population sizes for Island A. Round to the nearest whole number
On the first trip to Island B, 40 lizards are captured and marked, and on the second trip 35 are captured, of which 15 are marked. Estimate the population sizes for Island B. Round to the nearest whole number.
I know how to solve question #1 but I need help with question #2. I would like to know how to solve it.
2. In 5 years, there are an estimated 173 Anolis lizards on Island A, and 114 individuals on Island B.
a. Which island has the higher growth rate?
b. What will the population size of each island be in another 5 years time? Give your answers to 3 decimal places.
Explanation / Answer
Population on island A = (19 X 23)/3 = 146
Population on island B = (35 X 40 )/15 = 93
After 5 years,
Population on island A = 173
Population growth on island A = (173 - 146)/(146 X 5) = 0.1849 or 18.49% every 5 years
Population on island B = 114
Population growth on island B = (114 - 93)/(93) = 0.2258 or 22.58% every 5 years
Island B has higher growth rate
Another 5 years,
Population on island A =173 + .1849 X 173 = 204.988
Population on island B = 114 + .2258 X 114 = 139.741
