Question
What is the appearance of Elodea cells in hypotonic solution? Why was iodine able to diffuse across the membrane while starch was not? Water is able to move across the dialysis membrane but sucrose is not, why? When the diffusion bag contained 20% or 15% sucrose, the net movement of water was from the beaker to the bag. However, the change in mass was greater when the dialysis bag contained 20% sucrose than when it contained 15% sucrose, why? What is the appearance of Elodea cells in aquarium water? What is the appearance of Elodea cells in hypertonic solution? Why do vegetables in dressed salads wilt over time? What is the appearance of Elodea cells in hypotonic solution? What is the appearance of Elodea cells in hypertonic solution? Why do vegetables in dressed salads wilt over time?Explanation / Answer
1. In hypotonic solution the osmotic pressure will be more inside and there will be movement of water from outside to inside and causes swelling of the elodae and may cause bursting of cell.
2. Only iodine can diffuse through the cell membrane but starch not because of the semipermeable nature of the membrane which allows only small molecule to diffuse through it.
Since the iodine is very small molecule it can easily diffuse on the other hand starch is a large molecule composed of long chains of amyloser and amyloopectins so it cannot diffuse through the membrane.
3. Dialysis membrane acts like a semipermeable mebrane and pores of this membrane are big enough for water while sucrose molecule is quite large to diffuse through it.
4. It is because both the 20% and 15% sucrose is hypertonic to water so water moves out from the bag to beaker. but The rate of diffusion is greater in 20% sucrose as it is more hypertonic as compared to 15% sucrose. So there will be more mass change in 20% sucrosr solution containing bag.
5. aquarium water is isotonic for elodae cells and hence it will grow easily without shrinking or swelling.
6. In hypertonic solution the elodae cells will shrink because of the outward movement of water due to outward osmotic pressure.
7. Due to sprinkling of salt the outer environment become hypertonic and hence the water moved outward due to internal osmotic pressure.
