Question
John Doe has the "Stomach Flu" that is going around his office and has been vomiting constantly for the past 24 hours. He has been unable to keep down fluids, food and has also lost his acidic digestive juices that is secreted by the stomach which are normally reabsorbed back into the blood.1. How can the homeostatic maintenance of John's internal environment be disrupted by this condition and what homeostatic factors are shifted from normal as a result of his constant vomitting.
2. What organ systems resist the changes 3 What is the process of homeostasis with in the stomach
---------------------------------- I am thinking defining homeostasis then discussing homeostasis as it relates to the digestive system, the disruption of homeostasis in the stomach (factoring in stomach flue and loss of digestive juice) and then discussing how and by what means this can be corrected. Looking for more of a skeleton on how to approach if mine is incorrect or off tract. thanks much John Doe has the "Stomach Flu" that is going around his office and has been vomiting constantly for the past 24 hours. Explanation / Answer
1) Since John is losing a lot of the stomach acid (HCl) his pH will shift towards the basic side. Because his blood is basic, he will start hypo ventilating (in order to increase CO2 in his blood) to compensate for the loss of the H+ in his blood. You can understand this by the Henderson-Hasselbach equation. pH= pKa + log(CO2/HCO3) If John Doe's vomiting is not very severe this hypo ventilation process will correct the pH. But if the vomiting is severe, he may need some outside help. 2) As long as John Doe doesn't have any underlying medical problems, and if we assume that he is completely healthy, all of his organ systems will somehow be affected by this pH change and try to correct it somehow. The organ and the organ systems that will react the fastest will be the renal system, and the respiratory system. 3) The homeostasis process within the stomach would be the production of more HCl to compensate for the loss, and to fix the underlying problem that caused the whole mess in the first place.
