Question

A 12.0 L gas cylinder is filled with 6.60 moles of gas. The tank is stored at 53 ?C . What is the pressure in the tank?

Express your answer to three significant figures and include the appropriate units.

A 300. L kiln is used for vitrifying ceramics. It is currently operating at 1235 ?C , and the pressure is 1.100 atm . How many moles of air molecules are within the confines of the kiln?

Express your answer to three significant figures and include the appropriate units.

A 18.0 L gas cylinder has been filled with 5.20 moles of gas. You measure the pressure to be 4.20 atm . What is the temperature inside the tank?

Express your answer to three significant figures and include the appropriate units.

Explanation / Answer

Answer:

In all three problems, we have to use Ideal gas equation

PV=nRT

Where P=pressure, V=volume, n=number of moles, R=gas constant, T=absolute temperature.

(1) Given V=12 L, n=6.60 mol, T=53°C=53+273=326 K,

R=0.0821 L atm mol^-1 K^-1.

P=nRT/V

P=(6.6 mol x 0.0821 L atm mol^-1 K^-1 x 326 K)/12 L.

Therefore pressure, P=14.72 atm ~ 14.7 atm(3 significant figures)

(2) Given V=300 L, T=1235°C=1235+273 K=1508 K, P=1.1 atm

n=PV/RT=(1.1 atm x 300 L)/(0.0821 L atm mol^-1 K^-1 x 1508 K)

Therefore number of moles, n=2.665 mol ~ 2.66 mol.

(3) Given V=18 L, P=4.20 atm, n=5.20 mol.

T=PV/nR

T=(4.20 atm x 18 L)/(5.20 mol x 0.0821 L atm mol^-1 K^-1)

Therefore temperature, T=177 K or -96 °C.
