Question
a sample of carbon dioxide gas at a pressure of 0.955 atm and at a temperature of 130 degrees C, occupies a volume of 853 mL. if the gas is cooled at constant pressure until it’s volume is 583 mL, the temperature of the gas sample will be ____degrees C a sample of carbon dioxide gas at a pressure of 0.955 atm and at a temperature of 130 degrees C, occupies a volume of 853 mL. if the gas is cooled at constant pressure until it’s volume is 583 mL, the temperature of the gas sample will be ____degrees C a sample of carbon dioxide gas at a pressure of 0.955 atm and at a temperature of 130 degrees C, occupies a volume of 853 mL. if the gas is cooled at constant pressure until it’s volume is 583 mL, the temperature of the gas sample will be ____degrees CExplanation / Answer
According to ideal gas equation,
pV = nRT where p = pressure in atm
V = Volume in litres
n = no. of moles
R = Universal gas constant
T = Temperature in Kelvin
R = constant = pV/nT = pV/T (if n = 1 mole)
from this we can write,
p1V1/T1 = p2V2/T2
Given, p1 = 0.955 atm
V1 = 853 mL = 0.853 mL (1 L = 1000 mL)
T1 = 130o C = (130 + 273.15) K = 403.15 K (T in oC + 273.15 = T in K)
p2 = p1 = 0.955 atm
V2 = 583 mL = 0.583 L
T2 = (p2V2)T1 / p1V1 = ( 0.955 x 0.583 x 403.15 ) / ( 0.955 x 0.853 )
= 275.54 K
