Question

nickle (II) ion is a group III cation. The compound Ni(OH)2(s) is very insoluble in water; the Ksp of Ni(OH)2 is 2.0x10^-16> nevertheless, Ni(OH)2(s) does not precipitate from a basic solution that contains ammonia. Briefly explain this behavior. Write appropriate equations to support your answer.

Explanation / Answer

Ni(OH)2(s) + 4 NH3(aq) ----------> Ni(NH3)4++(aq) + 2 OH-(aq) : the tetramine complex ion of Ni++. Ni will precipitate only if the ionic product is at least equal to the KSP... to make the ionic product equal to its ksp, the concentration of OH- ions must be increased... however adding ammonia does not increase OH- ion concentration..... hence...
