Question

You performed these reactions in an acidic solution(diluting with 0.1MHNO3). This is because iron forms an insoluble hydroxide even when these solutions do not contain excess hydroxide ion (i.e. even in slightly acidic solutions).If the precipitate that forms is Fe(OH)3(S)Write the chemical reaction(molecular and full ionic) for the formation of this material starting with Fe(NO3)3 in aqueous solution.What effect, if any,would you predict using water in place of 0.1M HNO3 have on the absorbance of this solution at 450 nm for test tube#10( ABs= 0.132)?

Explanation / Answer

Without your hydroxide source, I have to use a placeholder for your hydroxide's molecular formula in the molecular equation:

Fe(NO3)3 (aq) + 3MOH(aq) ===> Fe(OH)3(s) + 3MNO3(aq)

Fe3+ (aq) + 3OH-(aq) ===> Fe(OH)3 (s)

Using water would cause the absorbance to increase. The acidic solution allows the basic Iron Hydroxide to stay dissolved, and thus reduce the absorbance and increase transparency. Using neutral water would cause the solid iron hydroxide to precipitate, increasing absorbance.
