Question
A solution consisting of isobutyl bromide and isobutyl choloride isfound to have a refractive index of 1.3931 at 20oC. The refractive indices at 20o C of isobutyl bromideand isobutyl choloride are 1.4368 and 1.3785 respectively.Determine the molar composition (in percent) of the mixture byassuming a linear relationship between the refractive index and themolar composition of the mixture. I need to see the math, the verbal write out is not working, I am not getting the answer of 75% and 25%. Please show math!Explanation / Answer
Its a straight forward mathematical relationship. They tell you to assume a linear relationship. Just take the difference between your refractive index of the solution and the isobutyl bromide (the bigger one) and divide that by the difference between the refractive index of the isobutyl bromide and the isobutyl chloride You should come up with the answer of ~ .75. So the answer is your solution consists of 75% isobutyl bromide and 25% isobutyl chloride
