Atoms and molecules have no thermal energy only at 0 K. For most metals just below the melting temperature, there is about one vacancy for every 10,000 atoms. Substitutional diffusion of atoms cannot occur without the presence of vacancies, which are usually formed at the surface in metals. Vacancy formation energies in metals are on the order of 1 eV/atom or less, so approximately one-quarter of the bonding energy. The vibrational frequency of atoms varies slightly with atomic mass and temperature, but is generally about 1015 s-1.
