Question

1. Your observations should reveal a difference in at least one property
between sodium benzoate and benzoic acid. What property was that, and
what observation will reveal the difference?

4. When you lower the pH of a sol of sodium benzoate a ppt forms, a)What
will happen if you raise the pH after the reaction by adding aqueous
NaOH? Why?

5. Water solubilities of oxalic acid and sodium oxalate at RT are 10g/100 ml
and 3.7 g/100 ml respectively. Could you prepare oxalic acid by adding
HCl to a solution of sodium oxalate, cooling it to room temperature, and
filtering the resulting mixture? Explain Why or why not?

Explanation / Answer

1) The property is solubility in water. sodium benzoate would be soluble in water, and benzoic acid isn't soluble.

2) if you raise the pH after the reaction by adding aqueous NaOH, the precipitate should dissolve because the precipitate dissolves in basic solution.

3) When sodium oxalate is added to water, it can dissolve in water at 3.7 g/100 mL solubility rate and gives the resulting oxalic acid solution at room temperature.

                Na2(COO)2 (aq) + 2 HCl (aq) -----> 2 NaCl (aq) + (COOH)2 (aq)
But after forming oxalic acid, it has the higher solubility (10 g/100 mL) at room temperature. To avoid this this much of greater solubility, we have to increase the temperature as temeperature is the one the factor for solubility.
