Question

1. Your consulting firm has won a remediation project at an old industrial site…… Congratulations! Unfortunately, all the reports and records for the site were lost in a fire. Upon site inspection you realize there are several monitoring wells on the property that may be useful for your project and save your client money if you can use the wells for sampling purposes. The problem is you don’t know anything about the well construction so they won’t be very useful unless you can determine some information. In a paragraph describe what technology and tools you could use to verify some information about the wells to make them useful for this project. Try to use those exisitinng wells. At least mention 3 gadgets, you could use the accoustic viewing log, water level pro to know the depth of water, resisitivity log (geophysics), caliber log to know the diametr of well board. Please elaborate more on those gadget or mention other gadgets and their uses.

Explanation / Answer

The technology that can be used to verify the information about the wells is known as well logging. Well logging refers to the use of various methods for knowing the properties of the rocks by using various physical principles. It include various logs like:

The resistivity tool works on the principle of electric resistivity, such that higher the water content in the soil lower the resisitivity and hence its signature can be used to know about the height of water table and also about the quantity of water present. Caliper logging tool have two arms and function by measuring the variation in the hole diameter which is caused when arms closes or open and this movement is reflected in resistance changes in the potentiometer. The acoustic tools works on the principle that higher the pore space in a formation higher would be loss of acoustic energy and thus less acoustic energy is received in the form of reflected wave. Thus by using this logging technique we can know about the porosity of the formations.
