Question
1 of 3 2. About 75% of the hydrogen for industrial use is produced by the steam-reforming process. This process is carried out in two stages called primary and secondary reforming. In the primary stage, a mixture of steam and methane at about 30 atm is heated over a Ni catalyst at 800 °C to give hydrogen and carbon monoxide: CH4(g) + H2O(g)- CO(g) + 3H2(g) Aff= 206 kJ/mol The secondary stage is carried out at about 1000 °C, in the presence of air, to convert the remaining methane to hydrogen: CH4(g) + ½Odg)-CO(g) + 2H2(g) AHo 35.7 kJ/mol primary and secondary stage? [3 ptslExplanation / Answer
To solve this we will use the lechetelier principle.
The first thing I see is that we have a positive value for Enthalpy so according to lechetelier´s principle the reaction will be favored at high temperatures. In real life this process takes place at very high temperatures 700 - 1100 C.
For the pressure conditions
We can see that in reaction 1 we have 2 moles of reactants that produces 4 moles of products
in reaction 2 we have 1.5 moles of reactants that produces 3 moles of products
so according to lechetelier principle the reaction should be provided with low pressures.
so a high temperature and low pressure will benefit the primary and the second stage
