Question

3. Match each of the quantities listed below with a letter from the energy diagram. Activation Energy of the forward reaction, E -Activation Energy of the reverse reaction, Ear AG products AG reactants a . G reaction B. Reaction Coordinate 4. Is the reaction depicted in the energy diagram above exothermic or endothermic? Explain your answer. 5. What is a transition state? If applicable, indicate the transition state on the energy diagram above 6. What is an intermediate? If applicable indicate an intermediate on the energy diagram above. Explain what a catalyst is and what it does when added to a reaction. Include how a catalyst affects the activation energy of a reaction in your explanation. 7.

Explanation / Answer

3. The quantities in from the figure are assigned as

Ea,f = B

Ea,r = C

dGproducts = E

dGreactants = A

dGreaction = C

4. It is exothermic reaction. As the free energy of product is smaller than the reactants i.e. E is smaller than A, hence the reaction is exothermic.

5. It is the highest energy state along the reaction coordinate. The top of the energy diagram is the transition state.

6. An intermediate is a molecule that is formed from the reactants which further reacts to give the product of a chemical reaction. In the above energy diagram, there is no intermediate. Intermediate exists in a multistep reaction.

7. A catalyst is a substance that helps the reaction to occur which is not possible otherwise but it does not take part in the reaction. Catalyst generally lowers the activation energy barrier of the reactants to proceed for the products.
