Question
Below is a partial DNA sequence from a coding gene in a diploid eukaryote. The DNA sequence spans two introns and two exons. Nucleotides that code for exon nucleotides are given in normal font, CAPITAL LETTERS. Nucleotides that code for intron nucleotides are given in normal font, lower case letters.
Original DNA:
3’ g t c A C A C G T T T A c a c g t t a a a c a t c G C G A A G T T T 5’
Below, assuming that the first letter of the mature mRNA is the first letter of a codon, give the amino acid sequence that would result from translation of the mature mRNA
Explanation / Answer
In eukaryotes, during transcription DNA is transcribed into pre mRNA which contain Exons and introns. Exons interupted by introns. Exons (expressed sequences) are coding sequences that code for proteins whereas introns ( interveining sequences) are non-functional. Splicing mechanism of RNA removes introns and join exons referred to as mature RNA that participate further in protein synthesis.
Splicing is carried out by small nuclear ribonuclearproteins known as "Snurps". They bind to 5' to 3' ends of introns forming a loop called spliceosome thereby releasing introns and ligates exons into mature mRNA containing triplet codons.
