e Fellow-Up Resources Exercise 21.30 previous 1 ltem 1 next Exercise 21.30 Part A How are nucleophilic substitution reactions used to make step-growth polymers? Check all that apply. diacids and diols react to form long chains with ester linkages diacids react with diamines to form long chains with amide linkages diacids and primary alcohols react to form long chains with ester linkages diacids and secondary amines react to form long chains with ester linkages O O Submit My Answers Give Up Provide Feedback ContinueExplanation / Answer
The correct option is 1st option
i.e diacid and diols combine to form long chain of esters
The reaction is HOOC-R1-COOH + OH-R2-OH ---> HCOOR-COOR2-OH
This reaction is nucleophilic substitution where OH part of COOH is substituted by OR of alcohol
The reaction of diacid with diamine gives us acid base reaction but not substitution since amines are very basic and abstracts COOH proton
We need diacid and diol so that after forming one ester linkage using 1COOH and 1OH we still have one free COOH and one OH to extend the chain
