ALL OF THE QUESTIONS ARE BASED OFF VIBRATIONS
a) A stone is thrown into a pond. What happens to the amplitude of the resulting waves as they get farther from the point where the stone hit the water? Explain.
b) An athlete of average size is hanging from the end of a 20 m long rope, which has a mass of 4 kg and is attached to a hook in the ceiling of a gym. If the athlete makes a sudden movement at the end of the rope, estimate how long it will take the disturbance to reach the hook.
c) If the speed of sound depended on frequency, what problems would this create for live concerts?
Explanation / Answer
a) As they Go farther, the amplitude of the waves die down as energy decreases..
b) velocity = sqrt ( tension/mass/unitlength) = sqrt(4*9.8/4/20)
velocity = 14 m/s
time taken , t = d/v = 20/14 = 1.428 seconds
c) The problem would be that as concert goes on, as frequency changes during play/concert, velocity changes and it doesn't reach/reaches early to the audience.
