Question

4. (20 points) F product. What type of reaction is produced (combustion, single replacement etc.)? What is the molarity of 30.0 L of a NiCl2 solution that reacts completely with 10.0 mL of a 0.250 M of NaOH solution. How Many grams of Ni(OH)2 are produced from the reaction of 35.0 mL of 1.75 M NaOH solution with NiCl2. Finally How many milliliters of a 0.200 M NaOH solution are needed to react with 18.0 milliliters of a 0.500 M NiCI2 solution.(20 points) or the reactants below determine the products, balance the equation, name each reactant and

Explanation / Answer

NiCl2 + NaOH = Ni(OH)2 + NaCl

this is precipitation reaction, balance:

NiCl2 + 2NaOH = Ni(OH)2 + 2NaCl

add phases

NiCl2(aq) + 2NaOH(aq) = Ni(OH)2(s) + 2NaCl(aq)

get:

mmol of NaOH = MV = 0.25*10 = 2.5 mmol

mmol of NiCl2 --> 1/2*2.5 = 1.25 mmol

[NiCl2] = mmol/V = 1.25 / 30 = 0.4166 M

now..

if NaOH --> MV = 1.75*35 = 61.25 mmol

then, mmol of Ni(OH)2 = 1/2*61.25   = 30.625 mmol will be produced

find V for

mmol of NicL2 = MV= 0.5*18 = 9 mmol of NiCl2

mmol of NaOH required = 2*9 = 18

V= mmol/M = 18/0.2 = 90 mL of base required
