Question
NUCLEAR MAGNETIC RESONANCE (NMR) PAPER LAB #1 Below is the NMR spectrum of diethyl ether. Use it to answer the questions that follow. (CH315C CH30- 10 9 8 7 6 4 3 2 0 HPt1-00-195 ppm i. Draw the structure of diethyl ether and identify what protons are responsible for the signals in the NMR spectrum. Use the proper labeling (a, b, etc) to match the protons on the structure to the protons on the spectrum. The spectrum of diethyl ether was obtained with a 300 MHz instrument and the individual proton resonances come at 3.47 and 1.21 ppm. Convert each of these values to Hz. ii.Explanation / Answer
i) The structure of diethylether is CH3CH2OCH2CH3
CH3 -CH2 -O - CH2 - CH3
a b b a
The 6 protons of a (the methyl) appear as a triplet at 1.2 ppm
the 4 b protons of CH2 appear as a quartet at 3.47 ppm .
ii) In an NMR spectrum of XMHz , 1 ppm equals to X Hz.
Thus in 300 MHz spectrum , 1 ppm equals to 300Hz.
Thus the proton resonances at
1.21 ppm = 1.21 x 300 = 363 Hz
3.47 ppm = 3.47 x 300 = 1041 Hz
