Question

8 of 25 An unknown compound contains only carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen (C,H, O,). Combustion of 2.50 g of this compound produced 3.67 g of carbon dioxide and 1.50 g of water. Part A How many moles of carbon, C, were in the original sample? Express your answer to three significant figures and include the appropriate units. Explanation / Answer

Ans :

Part A :

Number of moles of CO2 = given mass / molar mass

= 3.67 / 44.01

= 0.0833 mol

So number of mol of C is also equal to 0.0833 mol

Part B :

Number of mol of H2O = given mass / molar mass

= 1.50 / 18.01528

= 0.08326 mol

Number of H = 2 x 0.08326

= 0.166 mol
