Question

Sapling Learning this question has been custornized by the faculty at University of Artona The particulate model of matter is very useful in making predictions about the effect of different variables on the properties and behavior of chemical substances. For example: Grad Desa Polid of Adoms Use the simulation to predict the effect of increasing the mass of the particles on the average pressure in the system. Allow the pressure to stabillze everytime that you change a variable. 300 Volume 100 You Intermol. Forces Pressure decreases with increasing mass X-Axis : Pressure increases with increasing mass Reset Y-Axis Average Pressure 141.34 Pressure does not change when changing O on Gravity , of O He Whether pressure increases or decreases when changing the mass depends on the temperature of the system Collisionsoff If the simulation is too slow, go to htto://www.chem.arizona.edu/chemt/C21/sim/ohaseslim.html

Explanation / Answer

Let us start with the ideal gas equation:

PV = nRT

where,

P - Pressure

V - Volume

n - number of molecules

R - Universal Gas Constant

T- Temperature

Please observe that only the number of molecules is in the given equation and not the mass of the molecule.

Also at the given temperature, if we use a heavier gas, the number of molecules occupying the container decreases, since the volume of the container is constant.

Therefore the mass of the particle doesn't have an effect on the pressure of the system.
