Question
Be sure to answer all parts Report problem Fluorite, a mineral of calcium, is a compound of the metal with fluorine. Analysis shows that a 30.82-g sample of fluorite contains 15.01 g of fluorine. Calculate the following: (a) Mass of calcium in the sample. g Ca (b) Mass fractions of calcium and fluorine in fluorite. Calculate to 3 significant figures mass fraction Ca 0.487 mass fraction F (c) Mass percents of calcium and fluorine in fluorite. Calculate to 3 significant figures 1 mass %Ca 48.7 mass % FExplanation / Answer
a)
mass of fluorite = 30.82 g
mass of fluorine = 15.01 g
so,
mass of Ca = mass of fluorite - mass of fluorine
= 30.82 g - 15.01 g
= 15.81 g
Answer: 15.81 g
b)
mass fraction of Ca = mass of Ca / mass of fluorite
= 15.81 / 30.82
=0.5130
mass fraction of F = mass of F / mass of fluorite
= 15.01 / 30.82
=0.4870
c)
mass % of Ca = mass fraction of Ca * 100
= 0.5130*100
= 51.30 %
mass % of F = mass fraction of F * 100
= 0.4870*100
= 48.70 %
