Explanation / Answer

d. no ssingle Lewis structure adequately represents the structure of benzene.

There are many organic molecules whose behaviour cannot be explained by single Lewis structure. Benzene contains C-C and C=C bonds are inadequate for explaining its characteristic properties.

Benzene should exhibit two different bond lengths, due C-C bond and C=C bond. However, as determined experimentally, benzene has a uniform C-C bond distance 1.39 pm a value intermediate between the C-C bond 1.54 pm and C=C bond 1.34 pm distances. Thus, the structure of benzene cannot be represented adequately by single structure.

Further, benzene can be represented equally by energetically identical structures as given. Therefore, according to resonance theory the actual structure of benzene cannot be adequately represented by any of the given structures, rather it is a hybrid of the given two structures.
