Lab questions HELPPP

Suppose you reported to the instructor that your unknown was iron (II) carbonate,

but you find out this is incorrectyou are informed that your unknown actually contained potassium carbonate.

Give at least two specific errors that might have been made (dont list carelessness)

In this experiment, your unknown only contained one salt.

Suppose a student performed a similar experiment where she were given an unknown which contains

two salt compounds. Suppose she found evidence that potassium, ammonium, phosphate, and carbonate ions are all present.

Give the chemical formulas and chemical name for the four possible salts that could be in her unknown

Explanation / Answer

(A): specific errors that might have been made

1. Potassium carbonate is soluble in water and forms strongly alkaline solution, whereas iron(II) carbonate is insoluble, only flame test is confirmatory test for potassium and it shows violet–lilac (crimson through cobalt blue glass) color. Hence given unknown is contaminated with iron cation unintentionally.

2. By mistake you got a salt which is actually allotted to another student, which contains iron cation. There is no other way to be a potassium cation proved as false positive test for iron.

(B): Given ions are potassium, ammonium, phosphate, and carbonate

Possible salts are:

1. Potassium carbonate, K2CO3

2. Potassium phosphate, K3PO4

3. Ammonium carbonate, (NH4)2CO3

4. Ammonium phosphate, (NH4)3PO4
