Question

Both number one and two please!!!!

1. A student obtained the following results from the spectroscopy and titration experiments:

26.80% en, 16.01% Ni2+, 26.20% SO 2-, 30.99%H O. 42

Use this information to determine the empirical formula of the unknown complex nickel salt. (Remember that the calculations are based on data, so the mole ratios may not come out perfect...what should you do in this case?)

2. Consider the procedure for this experiment’s titration. Use this data collected to determine the % mass of ethylenediamine in the student’s synthesized salt for that trial:

Explanation / Answer

1) Check that all the percentages add up to 100.00.

Record the atomic/molar masses of the species:

en = 60.2172 g/mol

Ni = 58.6934 g/mol

SO42- = 96.056 g/mol

H2O = 18.01528 g/mol.

Find the number of mole(s) of each species by dividing the mass of the species (in 100 g) by the atomic/molar mass.

Mole(s) of en = (26.80 g)/(60.2172 g/mol) = 0.4450 mole.

Mole(s) of Ni = (16.01 g)/(58.6934 g/mol) = 0.2728 mole.

Mole(s) of SO42- = (26.20 g)/(96.056 g/mol) = 0.2727 mole.

Mole(s) of H2O = (30.99 g)/(18.01528 g/mol) = 1.7202 mole.

Find the ratio of the number of moles of the species as en:Ni:SO42-:H2O = (0.4450 mole):(0.2728 mole):(0.2727 mole):(1.7202 mole) = (0.4450/0.2727):(0.2728/0.2727):(0.2727/0.2727):(1.7202/0.2727) = 1.6318:1.0004:1.0000:6.3098.

Convert the above ratio to a simple ratio as em:Ni:SO42-:H2O = 2:1:1:6 (we round of the fractions to the nearest whole integers). This step is essential, since the we know that atoms/molecules/radicals are present in the simplest ratio in the empirical formula.

The empirical formula is therefore, [Ni(en)2]SO4.6H2O (ans).
