Question
Determine the identity of an unknown compound from the list below:
1) Aluminum(s)
2) Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate(s)
3)Barium Chloride(s)
4)Ammonia(aq)
5)Formic Acid(aq)
6)Sodium Hydroxide(s)
7)Hydrochloric Acid(aq)
8)Iron(III) Chloride(aq)
9)Ethanol(l)
10)Hexane(l)
11)Urea(s)
12)Potassium sulfate(s)
The following chemicals are available for use:
.1M HCl solution, pH 4 and 7 Buffer solution, .1M Sodium Hydroxide solution, .1M Silver nitrate solution, .1M Barium Chloride Solution, .1M Iron(III) nitrate solution, .1M Sodium Chloride Solution, .1M Potassium Chloride Solution, distilled water
List of Equipment available:
Spectrophotometer, pH probe and drop counter, temperature probe, conductivity detector, styrofoam cup calorimeter, and all other standard laboratory equipment.
QUESTIONS: How would you determine the unknown? Is there a flow chart you can build to show how to eliminate or identify each of the unknown chemicals?
EDIT: I bolded the questions, I'm asking if by using the above laboratory techniques and chemicals available, can you build a flowchart that essentially has each of the 12 possible unknowns as the bottom. For example: start with solubility at the top, is it soluble? One side of the chart takes you down insoluble, the other soluble, and split the list up with all the experiments available (spectroscopy, titration, calorimeter, etc...)to eventually figure out the unknown. Clear?
Explanation / Answer
First we can do the physical test like colour, ouder, solubility test, shape means Cristal or salt then do the heating test the we can do the different tests like HCl ,h2so4 ,brimine ,iodosed test then we can know functional groups .if we can't find salt name then we can do the alcoholic group test like the salt is alkyl groups then we do the remaining test in various state of we can find the salt name.
