Question

Name wax is mixed with sand. What is the best way to separate them? Give two different ways to accomplish this? Give examples 8. A rule of thumb exists that says, "like dissolves like". What does this mean? mean 9 How would you separate diamond dust from KCI salt? 10 A student started this experiment with a mixture weighing 2.345 g. After separating the components, a total of 2.765 g of material was recovered. Assume that all the weighing and calculations were done correctly. How could you explain the increase in weight of the recover material? ed A bunch of french fries with a mass of 100.0 g was covered in hexane (an organic liquid) in order to separate the oil. After separating and evaporating the hexane, there was 6.25 g of cooking oil that was taken out of the french fries. What was the percent oil in the potatoes? Show your calculations.

Explanation / Answer

7.

Candle is an organic material and sand is an inorganic material. Candle can be separated from sand by using an organic solvent. Candle is soluble in organic solvent such as hexane. Thus, hexane will dissolve candle from the mixture and sand can be filtered off. The hexane layer upon concentration (evaporation of hexane) will give back candle.

Another way of separation of candle from sand is use of heat. Candle is solid at room temperature and has a low melting point. Upon heating the mixture of candle and sand, candle will melt. Liquid candle can be filtered off from solid sand. Upon cooling liquid candle will again become solid.

8.

‘Like dissolves like’ is used to descrbie solubility of compounds based on their polarity. More polar compounds tend to dissolve easily in polar solvents. More nonpolar compounds tend to dissolve easily in nonpolar solvents.

For example: sugar is a polar solid and it dissolves easily in polar solvents such as water. Wax is a nonpolar solid and it dissolves easily in nonpolar solvents such as hexane.

9.

Diamond dust is insoluble in water and KCl salt is soluble in water. Thus, solubility difference of diamond dust and KCl salt in water can beused for their separation from a mixture.

Dissolve the mixture of diamond dust and KCl salt in water. Diamond dust will settle at the bottom and KCl salt will dissolve in water. Separate the diamond dust by filteration. Aqueous solution of KCl can be concentrated to get back solid KCl salt.

10.

The weightof diamond dust and KCl salt before separation was 2.345 g. The sum of weights of separated components is 2.765 g. The increase in weight of separated components can be attributed to presene of water. If the diamond dust or KCl salt is not dried thoroughly after separation, then the sum of their weights will be higher.

11.

The weight of cooking oil is separated from 100g of french fries is 6.25 g. Calculate percent of oil using following expression:

Percent of oil = (wt of oil/wt. of french fries) x 100

Percent of oil = (6.25 g / 100.0 g) x 100

Percent of oil = 6.25 %

Therefore, percent of oil in french fries is 6.25 %.
