Build Design Layout References Mailings Review View Tell me what you want to do- 1 u.ax x,x' A··A- 2.E- LNorrmal] 1 No Spac Heading 1 Heading 2 Font Paragraph Part C In the PhEI simulation, make sure that the checkbox Stable/Unstable in the bottom right is checked. Using the PhEI simulation as a reference, determine whether the following combinations of protons and neutrons form stable or unstable nuclei by adding protons and neutrons to the nucleus. Unstable nuclei will shake. If the Stable/Unstable checkbox in the lower right is also checked, the nuclei will be labeled Stable or Unstable. Sort the following combinations of protons and neutrons according to whether or not they form stable or unstable nuclei Stable or Unstable? Situation 1 proton and 2 neutrons 9 protons and 9 neutrons 7 protons and 7 neutrons 8 protons and 7 neutrons 4 protons and 5 neutrons 6 protons and 5 neutrons 2 protons and O neutrons What makes a situation unstable?

Explanation / Answer

Stable nuclei should have proton to neutron ratio between 1:1 and 1.5.A nucleus is unstable if neutron proton ration is < 1:1 and >1.5 .Within the nucleus strong nuclear forces exist between the nucleons(proton + neutron) and these attractive forces within the nucleus is due to neutron means ,neutron binds nucleus.More protons needs more neutron to bind the nucleus together. But after certain limit neutron will destabilise the nucleus so,neutron and proton ration should be in a particular range..

Situation Stable or unstable? 1 Proton 2 Neutrons unstable(Tritium,radioactive isotope) 9 Protons 9 Neutrons Stable(flourine) 7 Protons 7 Neutrons Stable(Nitrogen) 8 Protons 7 Neutrons unstable(Oxygen) 4 Protons 5 Neutrons Stable(beryllium) 6 Protons 5 Neutrons unstable(carbon) 2 Protons 0 Neutrons Unstable(Helium)
