2. What is the role of the ceppornturnings in the fractionating column used in our fractional distillation? Class Beads 3. Compare the column packing used in the GC to thepninthe fractionating column. How are they similar? How are they different? 4. What is the effect of the following on retention time seen in the GC? a Increases in flow rate of carrier gas. b. Increases in temperature of c. Increasing the polarity of the packing. Recording paper is moving at the rate 2.0 in/min, what are the retention times of the appear at a. 12.0 i b. 2.5 cmExplanation / Answer
2. The role of glass beads in fractional distillation is to increase the surface area for condensation of the liquid of the higher boiling point.
The higher boiling liquid also boils enters the fractionating column alongwith lower boiling liquid. The glass beads provide the surface area to the higher boiling liquid to condense, which then falls back and transfers its heat to the lower boiling liquid which goes up the column in vapor form and finally condenses in the condenser tube. Thus. a greater separation of liquids with the two different boiling points can be achieved using glass beads in fractionating column.
