THe enantiomers are so important in the drug discovery and the pharmocology due to the fact that the effect of the enantiomers on the biological systems. THey are sometimes very different in their activity in biological systems.Sometimes one enantiomer is toxic and the other enantiomer is biologically potent as drug and having other pharmocological activities.
Like for example S-thalidomide is a tetragen and the R-thalidomide is a sedative. (note the different biological activity in the enantiomers).S isomer is effective in the body while the R-isomer is a dangerous drug.
S-Amlodipine is an actice calcium channel blocker, while R-isomer is inactive as calcium channel blocker.
S-Ibuprofen is an active analgesic and the R-isomer is inactive.
