Question
Also in Drosophila grimshawi females may have very different numbers of offspring. Compare two populations of these Drosophila that both have the same effective population size calculated in #4. What is the effect of variation in family size on effective population size if in one population the mean family size is 10 offspring with a variance of 3.5 and in the other population the mean family size is 10 offspring with a variance of 1.5.
If you could explain what formula you use for this and why, that would be greatly appreciated. I missed the class that the professor went over this.
Explanation / Answer
the effect of variation in family size on effective population size is given by the following formula:
Ne = 4N /(Vk +2)
where Vk is the variance when the mean family size(k) is 10
Calculation for 1st population: Ne = (4 x 80)/(3.5 +2) = 58.18
Calculation for the other population: Ne = (4 x 80)/(1.5 +2) = 91.43
