Question

Alright I need help on this one. I don't know what I'm doingwrong. I'll go ahead and say this: the answer 245cmis WRONG. I've looked here and that answer isn'tright, so please think of another way this could be solved becausethe Cramster solution is incorrect. I've played around withnumbers near that hoping that it was just a rounding mistake, itisn't. It is incorrect. I need another approach here,this is due today and is the only one I'm not getting correct.

A 29 kg child sits at one end of a3.4 m long seesaw. Where should her 65 kgfather sit so the center of mass will be at the center of theseesaw?

___CM

Explanation / Answer

Given that       mc = 29 kg       mf = 65 kg       X = 3.4 m       Xc = 3.4 / 2 = 1.7 m       Xf = ? According to torque balancing condition we have              = 0 ==> c + f = 0 ==> FcXc -FfXf = 0 ==> FcXc = FfXfTherefore            Xf =FcXc / Ff = mcXc /mf   = 29 * 1.7 / 65 = 0.7584 m = 75.84 cm from the center.
