Experiment 6: Trends in the Periodic Table 191 Section Date D Name POST LAB QUESTIONS 1.) Place 10 drops of oim so, in two small test tubes. To the first test tube add 2 drops of (4 pts 0.IM Ca(NOs), and to the second test tube add 2 drops of 0.IM Mg(NO32 . Describe your observations and how these results could or could not be used to distinguish between which ions? 2. Devise a procedure for distinguishing between CaBitz and MgBln . a. (2 pts) What reagent can be used to distinguish between Cable and MgBry? b. (2 pts) Describe the different observations associated with Caby and Mgbly after adding the reagent. o. 3 pts) write the chemical equation of the reagent with each of CaBrz and Mgby. 3. Devise a procedure for distinguishing between MgBt2 and Mgly. a. (2 pts) what reagent can be used to distinguish between Mgby and Mgly b. (2 pts) Describe the different observations associated with Mgby and Mglk after adding the reagent. C. 3 pts) write the chemical equation of the reagent with each of Mgba and Malz.Explanation / Answer
1) A displacement reaction takes place in both the cases. The displacement reactions can be written as
Ca(NO3)2(aq) + H2SO4(aq) ---------> CaSO4(s) + 2 HNO3(aq)
Mg(NO3)2(aq) + H2SO4(aq) ---------> MgSO4(aq) + 2 HNO3(aq)
The reactions produce different products. CaSO4 is sparingly soluble in water and a murky white solution will be obtained on reaction of Ca(NO3)2 with H2SO4. MgSO4 is highly soluble in water and the reaction between Mg(NO3)2 and H2SO4 will yield a clear solution. We are talking about solubility in water since we are working with a very dilute solution (0.1 M) of H2SO4.
