Question

2 Assume you forgot to condition the 25.00 mL volumetric pipette after making each standard solution in Part B. How would this error affect the actual concentrations of the standard solutions, as opposed to your calculated values? a b How would the incorrect standard solution concentrations affect the Amax you measured for the dye? c How would the incorrect standard solution concentrations affect the slope of your calibration curve? d How would the incorrect standard solution concentrations affect the y-intercept of your calibration curve? How would the incorrect slope and y-intercept of your calibration curve affect the value of the molar absorptivity you measured for your dye? e f How would the incorrect molar absorptivity affect the absorbance measurements for your dye in the water enhancer solution? How would the incorrect absorbance measurement affect your calculated value for the concentrat dye in the water enhancer solution? g ion of your

Explanation / Answer

The student didn't rinse the volumetric flask with the standard solution each time. So there will be some deionised water left in the container and the solution was diluted. So the practical absorbance will be less than the theoretical value. The slope of the curve will increase.

d) . When the slope of the curve is increasing the Y intercept value will decrease

e) Molar absorptivity is calculated from the slope of the curve. The slope of the curve is increased so we will get higher values of molar absorptivity than original value

f) We are getting the higher molar absorptivity than correct value. Absorbance is directly related with absorptivity. So we will get higher absorbance for the dye.

g) The concentration of the dye is directly related with absorbance. If we are getting the higher values of absorbance than original one. We will get higher concentration as our answer than the correct concentration. The concentration of the dye will increase.
