Some of these strains possess three different kinds of protein appendages: fimbriae, conjugation pili, and flagella. What are the functions of each of these appendages? The functions of each of the appendages are as follows:

1. Fimbriae- Fimbriae is an appendage also known by the name of attachment pilli. They are mainly composed of curlin proteins and mainly function to facilitate adhesion or attachment.

2. Conjugation Pilli- Conjugation pilli help in conjugation and function by allowing the transfer of DNA from one bacterial cell to another.

3. Flagella- Flagella are whip-like appendages which allow for bacterial motility.

The most important appendage for infecting the bladder is fimbriae. Fimbriae is most important for infecting bladder because fimbriae allows for adhesion of bacteria to the bladder and cause infection.

The least important appendage for infecting the bladder is conjugation pilli because it plays no direct role in infection.
