Question
Four grams of the crystalline compound "A" dissolve in 100 mL of acetone at room temperature.
At boiling point temperature of acetone, 50 g of the same compound dissolve in the same volume of acetone.
How much material can theoretically recrystallize after 100 g of compound "A" is dissolved in 400 mL of boiling acetone and then cool to room temperature? Would the yield or the procedure and the purity of the product be better if only 50 mL of boiling acetone were used for the recrystallization of 100g "A"? Please explain.
Explanation / Answer
RT = room temperature
Solubility of A in acetone at RT = 4 g/100 ml acetone
Solubility of A in boiling acetone = 50 g/100 ml acetone
If 100 g A dissolved in 400 ml of boiling acetone,
Amount of A recrystallized after its cooled to RT = 100 - (400 x 4/100) = 84 g
the yield and puritiy of compound recrystallized are reliable and of sufficient purity.
If only 50 ml of boiling acetone were used, we would get = 100 - (50 x 4/100) = 98 g f recrystallized product A after cooling to room temperature which is greater than using 400 ml boiling acetone.
