Question

PLEASE ANSWER AS CLEAR AS POSSIBLE

Splitting of a signal in a proton NMR spectrum tells us the number of chemically non-equivalent hydrogens in the immediate vicinity of the hydrogen giving the signal. Predict the number of lines exhibited by hydrogens at the labeled positions in a first-order NMR spectrum. (Make the approximation that all coupling constants are equal.) The number of lines exhibited by hydrogen(s) a is The number of lines exhibited by hydrogen(s) b is The number of lines exhibited by hydrogen(s) c is The number of lines exhibited by hydrogen(s) a is The number of lines exhibited by hydrogen(s) b is The number of lines exhibited by hydrogen(s) c is

Explanation / Answer

As mentioned above, splitting in NMR signal will tell the number of chemically non-equivalent protons in the immediate C atom.

Since I = 1/2 for hydrogen it will give (n+1) siganls

if 2 types of chemically nonequivalent protons are there,

then it will give = (n1+1)(n2+1) ,

1 and 2 represents the first nad second type of protons.

1). CH3-CH(Br)-CH(CH3)2

Nearby a only one proton is there thus it appears as double

The number of lines exhibited by a protons is 2

Nearby b two types of protons are present one is -CH3 and other is -CH

thus (3+1)(1+1) = 8

The number of lines exhibited by b protons is 8

Nearby C two types of protons are present one is -CHBr- and other is two -CH3

thus (6+1)(1+1) = 14

The number of lines exhibited by c protons is 14

2)

Nearby a only one proton is there

thus 2 signals will be there

The number of lines exhibited by a proton are 2

Nearby b two types of protons are present one is from 2 -CH3 and other is -CH

thus (6+1)(1+1) = 14

The number of lines exhibited by b protons is 14

Nearby c only one proton is there

thus 2 signals will be there

The number of lines exhibited by C protons are 2
