Question

Any number of green plants can photosynthesize glucose (C_6H_12O_6) from carbon dioxide and water, producing oxygen as the remaining product. In an experiment in a biochemistry lab, 0.917 grams of glucose was produced in such an experiment. Calculate the volume of oxygen produced if it was collected over water at 42.0 degree C and a pressure of 736 Torr. The vapor pressure of water at 42.0 degree C is approximately 0.0987 atmospheres. Also, many grams of carbon dioxide were used in this biosynthesis?

Explanation / Answer

6CO2 + 6 H2O ------------------------> C6H12O6 + 6 O2

Temeperature = 42 + 273 = 315 K

Pressure of O2 = 736-42 = 694 torr

                          = 0.913 atm

moles of glucose = 0.917 / 180 = 5.09 x 10^-3

moles of O2 = 5.09 x 10^-3 x 6 = 0.0306

volume = n R T / P

              = 0.0306 x 0.0821 x 315 / 0.913

             = 0.866 L

volume of O2 = 0.866 L

from balanced equation moles of CO2 = moles of O2

moles of CO2 = 0.0306

mass of CO2 = 0.0306 x 44

mass of CO2 = 1.35 g
