Question

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Use the worked example above to help you solve this problem. A sled is tied to a tree on a frictionless, snow-covered hill, as shown in Figure (a). If the sled weighs 65.0 N, find the force exerted by the rope on the sled and the magnitude of the force ns exerted by the hill on the sled. Force exerted by the rope on the sled _ N Force exerted by the hill on the sled _ N Use the values from PRACTICE IT to help you work this exercise. Suppose a child of weight w climbs onto the sled. If the tension force is measured to be 58.0 N, find the weight of the child and the magnitude of the normal force acting on the sled. Weight of the child _ N Normal force on the sled _ N

Explanation / Answer

(a)

force exerted by the rope on sled is,

T = m*g*sin30

T = 65*0.5 = 322.5 N

(b)

force exerted by hill on the sled is,

N = m*g*cos30

N = 65*0.86 = 56.29 N

(c)

new tension after the child climb,

T' = (M*g + w)*sin30

58 = (65 + w)*0.5

w = 51 N

(d)

new normal force is,

N' = (m*g + w)*cos30

N' = (65 + 51)*cos30

N' = 100.45 N
