Question

4 Balance the following molecular equations and write net ionic Equation. Add coefficients before the formulas of molecular Equations. Also Phase label all species in ionic equations. Molecular Eq: CuSO_4(aq) + Na_3PO_4(aq) rightarrow Na_2SO_4(aq) + Cu_3(PO_4)_2(S) Net ionic Eq.: Molecular Eq Al(OH_3)(aq) + HNO_3(aq) rightarrow Al(NO_3)_3 (aq) + H_2O(l) Net ionic Eq.: You are given the value of Delta H for following combustion reactions C(s) + O_2(g) rightarrow CO_2(g) Delta H_1 = -393.5 kJ CO(g) + 1/2 O_2(g) rightarrow CO_2 Delta H_2 = -283.0 kJ Calculate enthalpy for the following combustion reaction C(s) + 1/2 O_2 rightarrow CO(g) Delta H_3 = ? Show all steps of calculation by rewriting equations below:

Explanation / Answer

Net ionic equation must contain ONLY ions reacting

so

From the products, only Cu3(PO4)2(s) has reacted, i.e forms a precipitate so,

Cu+2(aq) and PO4-3(aq) must be in the reactant side

Cu+2(aq) + PO4-3(aq) = Cu3(PO4)2(s)

balance

3Cu+2(aq) + 2PO4-3(aq) = Cu3(PO4)2(s)

B)

Similar, only H2O(l) forms, so

H+ and OH- are required

balance

3H+(aq) + 3OH-(aq) <--> 3H2O(l)

Q4.

Invert reaction 2, since we need CO in product side so

C + O2 = CO2 H = -393.5

CO2 = CO + 1/2O2 H = 283

Add all

CO2 + C + O2 = CO2 + CO + 1/2O2   H = -393.5+283

C + 1/2O2 = CO H = -393.5+283 = -110.5 kJ
