Question

Use the data in the table for time and concentration. Copy the data from the table into the spreadsheet provided Follow the instructions given in the spreadsheet Is the graph of the time versus concentration linear or non-linear? linear non-linear Input a best fit line and line equation into your graph and use the equation to answer the following questions. (Use the values from the equation rounded to five significant figures Enter your answers to three significant figures) What would the Concentration of the Solution be after 48 seconds? What would the concentration of the solution be after 4 days? At what time is the concentration 0.0700 M?

Explanation / Answer

the plot of concentration vs time is not a straight line. not linear.

its R2 value is only 0.973. while R2 value for an exponential curve is 0.999.

As shown below it is exponential suggesting the reaction to be 1st order. Since for 1st order, -dCA/dt= KCA, -dCA/dt= rate of reaction, CA= concentration of reactant at any time t and K is rate constant.

the equation when integrated gives CA= CAO*e(-Kt), CAO= initial concentration of reactant A.

the equation of best fit is

CA= 0.093*e(-0.01t)

at 48 seconds, CA= 0.093*exp(-0.01*48)= 0.0575 M

after t= 4 days= 4*24 hours =96 hours= 96*60 min ( 1 day =24 hours, 1 hr= 60 min) =5760 min

CA= 0.093*e(-0.01*5760)=8.97*10-27

given CA=0.07= 0.093e(-.01t)

t=28 min
