Question
Solve each of the following problems. Show work and include units to earn full credit. You will need to use a reference source to find the specific heat capacity of each substance (use the specific heat table on our class website or an outside web source. 200 g of water at 30 degree C are mixed with 20 g of silver at 350 degree C. Find the final temperature of the system. 26 g of water at 18 degree C are mixed with 49 g of water at 70 degree C. Find the final temperature of the system. 84 g of water at 22 degree C are mixed with 150 g of ethanol at 88 degree C. Find the final temperature of the system.Explanation / Answer
1.Hot body looses heat when come into contact with cold body. Cold body gains heat
Heat lost by bot body (silver)= heat gained by cold body (water)
Let the equilibrium temperatrue be T.
Mass of silver* spefic heat of silver* Temperature difference= mass of water* specific heat of water* temperature difference
Cp ( J/gm.deg.c) : water= 4.184, silver = 0.233, ethanol= 1.43
20*0.233*(350-T)= 200*4.184*(T-30)
20*0.233*350 -20*0.233T= 200*4.184*T-200*4.184*30
T*(20*0.233 + 200*4.184)= 200*4.184*30+20*0.233*350
T*(4.66+836.8)= 26735, T= 31.59 deg.c
2. for the second case, water at 70 deg.c looses heat and water at 18 deg.c gains heat
Hence 26*4.184*(T-18)= 49*4.184*(70-T)
26*(T-18)= 49*(70-T), T*(26+49)= 49*70+26*18, T= 51.97 deg.c
3.
84*4.814*(T-22)= 150* 1.430*(88-T)
T*(84*4.184+150*1.430)= 150*1.430*88+84*4.184*22
T = 47 ( ethanol is assumed to be vapor throuhout the process)
