Question
Use the general gas equation or one of the gas laws to calculate the following.
a. A sample of neon in an 18.5 L movable piston exerts a pressure of 1.20 atm at 298 K. At what temperature will the sample exert a pressure of 1.45 atm in a 14.0 volume?
Convert 14.0 L to ft^3. 1 L = 1 dm^3. 12 in = 1 ft.
b. A sample of nitrogen occupies a volume of 42.0 mL at prevailing atmospheric pressure. When the pressure of the sample is increased by 85.0 mmHg, the volume is reduced to 37.0 mmHg. What is the barometric pressure? Assume constant temperature.
c. A balloon is filled with air to a volume of 0.500 L at 25.0 C and 1.00 atm. The balloon is placed in a freezer at -15.0 C. Calculate the new volume.
Explanation / Answer
Solution
a) V1= 18.5, P1 = 1.20 atm , T1 = 298K
V2 = 14 , P2 = 1.45 atm , T2= ?
Applying P1V1/T1 = P2V2/T2
= T2 = 272.5 K
b) Assuming constant temperature
P1V1 = P2V2
= 42ml * P1 = (P1+85)* 37 ml
= P1 = 629 mm of Hg '
c) Applying
V1/T1 = V2/T2
= 0.5 / 298K = V2 / 258
= 0.432 L = V2
