Question

Based on your knowledge of the Lewis structures of the ligands you used in this lab and the calculated transition energies, place the following additional ligands in your experimentally generated spectrochemical series. a. CO b. CH_3OH c. Br^- When you made a solution of your complex, it was not important to have exactly 0.020 M. It was only important to be close to 0.020 M and to know the concentration exactly. Thinking about how you used the concentration information in the lab, what would the problem be if you didn't know the concentration of the solution? What would be the problem if your concentration were, for example, too high (maybe 0.20 M)?

Explanation / Answer

Question 1. The spectrochemical series of ligands is ordered according to the field of the ligands. A ligand will have a strong field if it is a -acceptor and it will have a weak field if it is a -donor.

Br- is a -donor.

CO is a -acceptor.

CH3OH is neither.

Based on that we can conclude the following order in the spectrochemical series:

CO > CH3OH > Br-
