Question

What is Green Chemistry and how did it begin? According to the EPA what is the purpose of green chemistry? In your own words, give your understanding of the purpose of Green Chemistry? How is the green chemistry approach different than previous approaches to problems in chemistry? What are the 12 principles of green chemistry? What makes a molecule toxic? Are all molecules toxic? Pick 3 principles of green chemistry and give one way that you can apply these specific principles at home and in your future career. What is the contribution of John Warner and Paul Anastas to the green chemistry model? What have you learned from your research on green chemistry that surprised and/or interested you? Regarding this concept, what would you like to learn more about?

Explanation / Answer

Green chemistry is also known as sustainable chemistry which focuses on less production of hazardous chemicals.

7.

3 principles of green chemistry:

1. Prevention: It is better to prevent waste than to treat or clean up waste after it has been created.

We can apply this principle at home. We are using non-biodegradable plastics at every point in home; we can replace it with paper bags or cotton bags. Also we can find new biodegradable polymers and incorporate them in daily chores.

This can also be a good business career-wise.

2. Less Hazardous Chemical Syntheses: New synthetic methods should be designed to use and generate substances that possess little or no toxicity to human health and the environment.

We have done this many times. We have banned DDT and developed new pesticides.

3. Safer solvents and oxillaries:

The use of auxiliary substances (e.g., solvents, separation agents, etc.) should be made unnecessary wherever possible and innocuous when used.

We use xylene, Toluene, Acetic acid in household we can replace them with Citragold-orange oil based cleaner.

8. John Warner and Paul Anastas are the two people who developed 12 principles of Green chemistry and outlined early conception of each principle.

They have published many articles and around ten books on Green chemistry.

I was surprised by this industrial culture which is only fixated on earning money but not thinking about harm to the planet. We are doing many things that are hazardous to us and earth. I learned that we can replace many chemicals by safer ones. I learnt that waste need to be managed even before buying ir using anything. I also realized that we need to be proactive in this case, as it will lead to extinction of us and we may need to go to mars and next generations will learn Red Chemistry.

10.

I would like to learn more about different processes and what we can do in less steps, using less energy, safer starting materials. I know it will influence us all. Therefore, I will love to learn more about basic chemistry and clear my concepts which will help me in replacing above mentioned harmful ways. Also as Green word suggests Biochemistry may also play important role in this. I would like to learn that also.
