Question

A. The NoOH solution is very sensitive to the air which is why it must be kept away from the atmosphere. Write the balanced equation for the reaction of NaOH with CO_2 from the air. NaOH + CO_2 => Na H CO_3 b. Based on your balanced equation what will happen to the molarity of the NaOH solution if exposed to CO_2 over a long period of time? Describe the phenomena that is occurring at the equivalence point in the acid base reaction between HCl and NaOH. Be specific in regards to the reactant amounts.

Explanation / Answer

Question a

Balanced equation:
CO2 + H2O = H2CO3

NaOH + H2CO3 = NaHCO3 + H2O

When the alkali (NaOH) solution is dilute, carbon dioxide first reacts with water to form carbonic acid (H2CO3) slowly. The acid thus formed then reacts with the alkali to give sodium hydrogencarbonate (NaHCO3).

Question b

Since NaOH is converted to NaHCO3, The amount of NaOH is reduced. Hence NaOH molarity will be reduced over a peroid of time exposing to moisture and CO2.

Quesiton c

When NaOH and HCl reacts together which will give NaCl and water as major product.

Balanced equation:
NaOH + HCl = NaCl + H2O

At equivalnce point All NaOH and HCl will be converted to NaCl and water. SInce no acid or base presents in the solution the pH will reach exactly 7.0
